Starseed Academy

Wildschool in San Diego

Cultivating a Love of Learning with Mother Nature as our Guide

Our world of technological dependence has created a disconnect with nature, and childhood time has become extremely hectic and structured. At Starseed, we strive to reconnect to Our Roots of Nature and learn through exploration and play under the bright blue, sunny skies of San Diego, California.

Starseed Academy is a fully outdoor educational program for 9-14 year old kids and runs Monday-Thursday 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM, September to June. We are located at Mission Bay Park, (2590 E. Mission Bay Drive). Starseed is inspired by the Scandinavian nature/forest school movement. At Starseed, we focus on the development of the whole child involving the balance of the body, mind, soul and spirit.

Everything that is not taught at traditional school is taught at Starseed!

Starseed Academy prides itself as a place of unique learning & truly prepares children how to navigate themselves in the world by learning & creating in The Great Outdoors.

Your child can join our Starseed Soul Pod and gain an out of this world education! Starseed Academy is leading the Unschool/Wildschool movement for 9-14 year olds.

Hi! I am Mrs. Tamara

Hi! I am Mrs. Tamara. I am the Founder, Director, and Lead-Creative Facilitator/Teacher at Starseed Nature Holistic School. I believe in alternative Wildschooling and in child centered learning, outside under nature’s beautiful canopy of trees and bright blue, sunny skies.

In 2005, I had the unique and amazing opportunity to circumnavigate Planet Earth with Semester at Sea. On the Fall 2005 voyage, I opened my eyes up to our vast, breathtaking world and had unforgettable experiences. I volunteered at orphanages in Venezuela and Brazil, helped facilitate a school program for teens in a Township in South Africa, worked with children at a deaf school in Myanmar, and studied at a university in Vietnam while learning side by side with the local students.

Ever since I was a little girl my father often told me, “You can do anything you put your mind to Tammy.” I did just that and I have been teaching children in the classroom setting since 2011. I have taught children and adults English Language and Literature in Chile, Argentina, Germany and in my hometown of San Diego, California. I absolutely love integrating my love of travel, language and cultures into my classes.

In 2020, I branched out on my own and became a self-employed homeschool teacher and tutor. I built a successful tutoring business, and often tutored my students in nature at La Jolla Bike & Nature Path, Windansea Beach, Point Loma Docks, Tecolote Canyon & Recreation Center, Point Loma Library Park & Bessemer Beach. I soon realized that incorporating the natural world into my lessons added an element of creation, exploration, focus and calm. After 2.5 years of one-on-one tutoring, I longed for the classroom setting but knew it had to integrate Mother Nature. I then decided to launch my alternative educational program: Starseed at Mission Bay Park! Starseed has been running since Fall 2022 and serves numerous children in need of an untraditional classroom setting, where they can grow, create, and explore in The Great Outdoors down by the bay!

Starseed takes place rain or shine!

Starseed takes place rain or shine! Mrs. Tamara will never forget the German Adage that she learned from her Father-in-Law while living in Hamburg, Germany and as it goes: “Es gibt kein schlechtes Wetter nur die falsche Kleidung” is translated to: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.” At the time, this was a rather difficult concept for her to grasp having grown up and spending most of her life in Sunny San Diego. Mrs. Tamara lived and taught school children in Northern Germany, home to Rudolph Steiner, (Waldorf School) and the “Waldschule,” (Forest School Movement). She adored her time there and learned numerous pedagogies. Years later, she was inspired to bring home what she had learned from her time abroad to help lay the foundation of creating her very own Nature Wildschool, Starseed.

““Hope” is the thing with feathers – That perches in the soul – And sings the tune without the words – And never stops – at all”

–Emily Dickinson
